What type of Chinese translation?
| Chinese is a complex language: there are two main dialects of spoken Chinese, and two forms of written Chinese. It is helpful for us to know which type of translation you require; however, we are happy to assist you in finding out. The different types are explained below. |
Spoken Chinese: The Differences between Mandarin or Cantonese
There are numerous Chinese dialects; however most are rarely heard outside rural provinces. There are two main dialects which are used by the media, in business and industry, and for official purposes. These are Mandarin and Cantonese.
Mainland China uses Mandarin as an official language, which is the most commonly used version of the Chinese language both in the mainland, Taiwan and Singapore. Cantonese, on the other hand, is widely spoken in Hong Kong and Macao as well as the Canton (or Guangdong) province of mainland China.
|
Written Chinese: Simplified or Traditional?
| There are also differences in written Chinese. Nowadays, two forms of Chinese characters are used. One is known as 'simplified’ and the other as 'traditional'. The simplified Chinese was introduced in mainland China by the government in 1949 for the purpose of improving the literacy rate of the population. The population outside mainland China continued to use the original traditional script.
The major difference between the traditional and the simplified version of Chinese is that the traditional form uses a more complicated writing style, whereas the modern simplified characters are regarded as being easier to use.
